Telescopes for Sale - Finding Beginner Telescopes to Get Into Astronomy

by Father Sky on April 25, 2011

Astronomy is a fascinating hobby. Imagine this is not like a Nintendo Wii! You don't have to keep buying new games for your telescope. All you need is a telescope, and you can start to see the beauty of the heavens. There is no boredom when it comes to astronomy. Everything is fun, and here is why. We live on a planet called Earth. This planet Earth is a big place, it is immense, and would require a lifetime to discover it. Space is just as immense and even looking for a new object everyday, you would be amazed at in a lifetime you would still have an infinite amount you have not seen. This makes astronomy a hobby which brings people a lifetime of enjoyment and adventure. To get into astronomy, there are a few things you need. Most people would say all you need is a telescope, however, there are some tips I can offer you, as it is kind of like owning a car. You could buy a car, and without the right lessons, the car is pretty much no use. Likewise looking for telescopes for sale and buying a beginner telescope is not the only thing that is needed, you will need a good star map, and I strongly suggest a practical astronomy book. This will enable you to go from novice to beginner. Now to look at the most important aspect and that is the telescope. The main purpose of a telescope is to allow you to basically see more light! When you look at a star for instance, the object you see, and its size is based on how big your pupil is, and how much light enters. The role of the telescope is to get more light focused on your eye. This allows you to be able to see more, and see bigger things, than you would on a smaller telescope or with no telescope at all. When looking for telescopes for sale, they come in 2 main varieties. The first is the refractor telescopes, which is termed the Galileo telescope after his design. This is a long tube, where you look from the back, and lenses at the front focus the light towards your eye. The other version you likely will find is the Newtonian reflector, named after Isaac Newton. This telescope utilizes a mirror at the back which focuses the light to a secondary mirror near to the top of the instrument. The light then enters your eye at the side of the tube. Both these telescopes work, and work great. Another option is the computerized GoTo telescopes. These can be amazing because you don't need to learn how to navigate the heavens. It acts like a Tom Tom, however with the added advantage that it maneuvers and finds the object itself. My suggestion is to look for telescopes for sale that range in price of $100 to $600. This kind of price range is a good one for first time telescope users. It will also give you a scientific instrument which you can use for years and possibly decades and be happy with it!
